Elvis meets Shakespeare: ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ rocks the St. James Community Center
ST. JAMES, NC (WWAY) — To rock, or not to rock, that is the question at the St. James Community Center this weekend.
The Brunswick Little Theatre collaborated with the St. James Service Club to present the Shakespeare play “Much Ado About Nothing” with a twist. That twist being Elvis Presley songs in place of the play’s usual medieval melodies.
The cast and crew spent three months developing the play before opening night. Director Rosina Whitfield said she wanted to combine the prose of Shakespeare with the setting of a beach town.
“Well we’re in a beach community, I knew it’d be summer, I know it’s a resort area. So, I thought ‘what would make sense?’ Shakespeare can be done anywhere, fits in anytime because it’s so universal,” she said.
The play’s last performance was held on Saturday, though Whitfield said she would be open to performances at another venue in the future.
