Sharks season pushed back, team remains hopeful to play this summer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–Baseball might just be returning to the Cape Fear this summer. The Wilmington Sharks announced their 2020 season was not being cancelled, but instead the league is pushing back the start date to July 1st.

“We’re thrilled you know that gives us a shot to play ball this summer,”says Sharks General Manager Carson Bowen.

The announcement from the Coastal Plain League comes after the Cape Cod League decided to cancel their 2020 season last Friday. The Sharks say this new development provided their organization a little relief, giving their players something to look forward too.

“I know that there’s things other than just baseball, but we’re looking at it as one of those things where we just will take anything,”said Sharks pitcher Austin Skipper. “I mean anytime we get a chance to play were going to be happy for it. I know I am.”

The organization says this decision by the CPL not only impacts the team, but their fans as well. They think if they’re able to get back on the field on July 1st if will provide the community with a sense of normalcy.

“Right now folks are sitting at their houses with their families all the time,”said Bowen. “So, if we can give them a chance to sit next to a stranger and high five then that’s what we want to do.”

Those players lacing up their cleats say this summer will be huge after having to miss more than half of their collegiate seasons.

“This is a great opportunity just get back into it, get things going on the baseball field again,”says Skipper. “In this situation we are in your going to try to get anything you can in and hopefully that happens this summer.”

In line with the Coastal Plain League’s new start date of July 1st, the Wilmington Sharks adjusted schedule will feature 21 home games and 21 road games spanning from July 1st to August 15th. The new schedule is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
