At least 22 dead in Alabama after tornado

LEE COUNTY, AL (AP) — At least 22 people were killed in Lee County after multiple tornadoes ripped through east Alabama on Sunday.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said the death toll was expected to rise in the coming hours. Harris said ambulances were still rescuing victims from the debris.

The state mortuary team had been activated to help with the response he said. Multiple homes were destroyed or damaged in Beauregard, about 60 miles east of Montgomery, said Lee County EMA spokeswoman Rita Smith.

The Lee County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) said more than 150 first responders were on the ground in the moments after the storm. All schools in Lee County were closed for Monday.
