Singing for democracy: UU Congregation of Wilmington lifts spirits at polling location

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Election Day can be stressful for many. So, one group headed out to the polls Tuesday to spread some joy to those voting.

Members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wilmington gathered at the Northeast Branch Library polling location to sing songs

They wanted to make people feel comfortable when voting.

They adjusted some of the lyrics to make the songs relevant to election day.

Within the songs — they made sure to say, “vote here” and “thank you” to voters.

A member of the congregation, Peter Rawitsch says spreading joy is very important.

“Spreading joy is important on Election Day but it is also going to be important every day after the election. We are stronger together, we have so much in common with each other. We should be joyful and grateful for all of that,” Rawitsch said.

Rawitsch added they were going to head to other polling locations to sing more happy songs.
