Six local teams advance to state high school regionals


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Today, seven teams from Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover counties played in state playoff games and six of those teams advanced to the state regionals.

New Hanover Wildcats baseball continued their dominance as the number one team in the state shut out Fuquay Varina High School 7-0. They will host Holly Springs for round one of the regional series.

Topsail won their game in dramatic walkoff fashion tonight after trailing 1-0 to West Brunswick after one. The Pirates scored the game winning run at the bottom of the 9th and advance to the 3A regionals.

The West Brunswick Softball team was more fortunate than their baseball team as they did get the win in extra innings by a final score of 1-0.

The Whiteville Soccer team scored more runs than the previous four teams mentioned combined as they are headed to regional with a 15-2 victory against Princeton High School.

The Wolfpack baseball team got the win as well so they will be moving on. They won their game at Bear Grass Charter 4-2.

Finally, the upset of the day. The Hoggard Vikings soccer team travelled to play against Green Hope High School where they were tied after regulation. The game would have to be decided in penalty kicks where the Vikings would get the victory and move on to the regional round as well.
