NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — A Plover chick was recently freed from a clam shell by Skywatch Bird Rescue.

The chick was brought in to Skywatch Bird Rescue Clinic by beachgoers who found him struggling in the dunes with his foot slammed shut in a clam shell.

They were able to carefully pry open the clam to free his foot in the clinic, but the force had unfortunately partially amputated one of his toes.

They say that it will not impact his survivability, and this chick was running confidently after treatment for his wounds.

He was reunited with his nesting colony within a protected area of the beach, and his parents recognized and found him right away.
