Slow election day at Cape Fear precincts following busy early voting period
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — After more than 2 weeks of early voting, Tuesday was your final chance to vote, and activity at some precincts in the Cape Fear was slower than expected.
At the Leland Cultural Arts Center, a few poll workers WWAY spoke with said Tuesday’s turnout was slower than anticipated.
This was a stark contrast to early voting at the Arts Center when many voters had to wait in hour-long lines before casting their ballots.
While it was slow on Tuesday, poll workers expected things to pick up as it got closer to the time when polls closed, which did happen as several times, a line out a door formed.
WWAY saw many voters in line, including first-time voter Jonathan Thomson, who said he was glad to be a part of the election process.
“I think it means to be an American” Thomson said. “This is what the whole country is built on, just having the choice to change things around us. I think it feels good. I think, you know, we’re all thinking in the same mindset, that its not just me out here, it’s everyone so its, you know, its a community thing.”
More than 260,000 people too part in early voting in the Cape Fear this year.
