WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Brooklyn Arts District in downtown Wilmington will host its first-ever Social District event this Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

Approved by the City of Wilmington, the initiative will continue on the first and third Saturdays for the next six months. Visitors will be able to purchase drinks from participating businesses and carry them outdoors within marked district boundaries.

The Social District was created by the Brooklyn Arts District Collective in partnership with Wilmington Downtown Inc. and the City of Wilmington. Organizers say the effort is intended to support local businesses and encourage residents and visitors to explore the neighborhood.

Social District rules

  • Drinks must be purchased from participating businesses.
  • Beverages must be carried in branded, recyclable cups provided by vendors.
  • Outside alcohol is not permitted.
  • Drinks must be finished and disposed of before entering another ABC-permitted business.
  • Carrying beverages between bars or restaurants is not allowed.
  • Participants must be 21 or older and carry a valid ID.

WDI says staff, ambassadors, and law enforcement will monitor the events to help with cleanup, visitor assistance, and overall safety.

Parking in the Brooklyn Arts District is limited. WDI recommends that visitors park outside the neighborhood to reduce congestion.

The Skyline Center Parking Deck at 155 Brunswick Street is two blocks away.

Rideshare services are also encouraged.

The next Social District event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18.
