Some curfews lift, police show less force amid peaceful protests
NEW YORK (AP) — Officials in New York City and Chicago have lifted curfews amid protests of police brutality and racial injustice following the death of George Floyd.
At the same time, leaders in several cities are urging demonstrators to be tested for the coronavirus.
Floyd’s death has set off nationwide protests and renewed calls to reform policing in America. Cities imposed curfews as protests last week were marred by spasms of arson, assaults and smash-and-grab raids on businesses.
But recent U.S. protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful — and over the weekend, several police departments appeared to retreat from aggressive tactics.
Meanwhile, protests of racial injustice continued around the world in places like London, Brussels and Madrid.
