Some working on Christmas to make the holidays go smoothly and safely for others
THE LATEST (WWAY) — On Christmas Day, many families and friends gather together to spend time enjoying the holidays and taking time off from work.
For some, they work so others can enjoy the holidays safely and smoothly.
Wilmington Fire Department Firefighter Tom McGovern said while it’s not easy to be away from family, the job is necessary.
“We might not be able to go home to our families, but serving our community is what we signed up for and it’s our job. So, at the end of the day, even if we have to be away from them for a little bit for important holidays and what not, we still have a role to do in this community to help keep it safe,” McGovern said.
McGovern added that even though he and his team are working, do not be afraid to call if help is needed.
“If you see something, please don’t hesitate to call. But just keep an eye out for each other, make sure that your neighbors are safe, your families is safe and your friends are safe,” said McGovern.
While first responders are often front and center when it comes to working on Christmas, others in the community play an important role as well.
Samantha Hill, an employee at a BP gas station in Leland said the job is important due to all the commuting that can happen on Christmas Day.
“Everyone’s traveling, you know going from house to house and all that. So, if they need a beverage, bathroom break or other things, gas. So, it’s pretty important actually,” Hill added.
