SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — It was just another day at work if you ask Southport Fire Department Capt. Jonathan Bullard on his efforts Tuesday night.

Just before 11:30pm Tuesday evening, a car plunged into the river at Waterfront Park in Southport. One person was inside the vehicle and was in danger of drowning. Southport Assistant Police Chief Tony Burke said they responded immediately to the scene.

“The officers responded on scene, they were there pretty quickly. Saw a vehicle floating and ultimately the driver of the vehicle was able to get out on his own.”

The man was in the water calling for help. Southport Police threw life rings to him, but he was unable to get to them. Southport Fire Department Captain Johnathan Bullard dove in and swam out.

“So, my driver went down to the beach and was holding a light to it, on the subject. Then the PD officers did the same thing, made the swim and made the grab,” Bullard said.

Bullard said he swam about 150 yards to the man, who was thankful for the rescue. Bullard said its just another day at work, but it helps to stay prepared with training.

“Very important, we train every day on shift. So, different field because we have to operate in different areas. So, our expertise is wide,” Bullard said.

On Wednesday afternoon, crews removed the car from the water. Police suspect alcohol and speeding played a role in the crash, but it’s still under investigation.
