Southport sees traffic standstill as NC 211 closure continues
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Traffic in Southport came to a standstill Monday evening as the city reels from major road closures.
More than a foot of rain brought by Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 last week left several roads closed and collapsed around Southport, most notably NC 211, which is one of the major roads heading into the city.
Currently, NC 87 is the only way in and out of the city. WWAY received reports that some had to wait three hours to just to start moving.
On Tuesday, Police Chief Todd Coring met with representatives from the state highway patrol to discuss potential remedies.
“We’re just asking people to be patient with us and understand if your daily routine took you 20 minutes, it may take you an hour right now until we get some roadways back on 211 and some of our feeder roads,” Coring noted.
Coring said officers will be directing traffic from NC 87 onto Long Beach Road as needed until traffic conditions begin improving.
