Spartans fall in NCAA tournament…Hawaii upsets Cal…Day widens lead
ST. LOUIS (AP) – No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee State has sent the biggest shock yet through the NCAA Tournament, topping second-seeded Michigan State 90-81 in the first round. Reggie Upshaw scored 21 points to lead the balanced Blue Raiders to the wire-to-wire win. It was the eighth time in tournament history that a No. 15 seed beat a No. 2 seed.
SPOKANE, Wash. – Quincy Smith scored a career-high 19 points to lead Hawaii to an upset over No. 4 seed California 77-66 in first round NCAA Tournament play. It is the first NCAA Tournament win in school history for the Big West Conference regular season and tournament champs.
NEW YORK (AP) – Villanova got 17 points from Daniel Ochefu and 14 more from Ryan Arcidiacono (ahr-chee-dee-ah-KOH’-noh) in an 86-56 rout of UNC Asheville in first round NCAA Tournament action. The second-seeded Wildcats improved to 30-5.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Malachi Richardson scored 21 points to lead 10th-seed Syracuse over No. 7 seed Dayton 70-51 in the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The Orange’s clamp down zone defense limited the Flyers to 32 percent shooting in improving to 20-13.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Jason Day fired a 5-under 67 to open a five-shot lead among the early finishers in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Australian is at 13-under at the halfway point. Jamie Lovemark posted a second straight 68 to move into second place.
