Special Olympics athletes compete in 2015 Spring Games

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Area Special Olympics athletes hit UNCW’s track for the 2015 Spring Games Wednesday.

More than 400 athletes ages 8 and up competed for ribbons. Athletes participated in a number of track events.

Tracy Stephens, a Murray Middle School teacher’s aide, say it wasn’t just about winning it was about seeing some familiar faces.

“They enjoy coming out and seeing their old friends from their old schools and they enjoy being around these other students and teachers. And they enjoy getting ribbons,” said Stephens.

New Hanover County school students participated into the early afternoon and adults and independents had their fun after.
