Strong weekend earns Montgomery CAA rookie honors
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Freshman Brynn Montgomery was named Rookie-of-the-Week by the Colonial Athletic Association after helping UNCW to a 3-0 record and a tournament win at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic.
“Brynn’s setting and offensive attack had a big role in our 3-0 record last weekend,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “It’s difficult to split time between the setter and hitter positions, but her versatility has been a huge asset to our team.”
Montgomery, a native of Fort Collins, Colo., posted a pair of double-doubles against Liberty and Western Michigan and narrowly missed a triple-double against Liberty in a 3-1 win to open the tournament.
For the weekend, Montgomery hit .222 with a kill average of .349 and totaling 22 kills in 63 attacks. She added 52 assists and 25 digs.
Against the Flames, Montgomery collected 14 kills in 29 attacks for a .414 hitting average while doling out 20 assists and picking up nine digs.
In the tournament championship, Montgomery posted 18 assists and 11 digs against Western Michigan.
Montgomery has five double-doubles to her credit this season.
The Seahawks, who closed out non-conference play with a 6-6 mark, open conference on the road at Northeastern on Sept. 22.
