Students using UNCW bike share program more than ever

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW’s bike share program is soaring. The University says Hawk Wheels nearly tripled since the program started.

The program started with a soft opening in November. It began with 25 bicycles and four stations on campus to help students and faculty adjust to the program. They are now providing 70 bicycles across a dozen stations throughout campus. Nick Cannon, Alternative Transportation Coordinator, believes its a big chance for the better.

“In the fall semester of last year, whenever we first started just in that month, we were averaging maybe 100 rides a day, maybe a bit less. Then in the spring semester, we were doing 200 to 250 rides a day. Now, this semester, we’re getting about 700 rides a day,” Cannon says.

He also says the bikes are maintained by a shop on campus.
