Sunset Beach police urge caution as alligator mating season begins
SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — With alligator mating season approaching, the Sunset Beach Police Department is urging residents and visitors to keep their distance from the animals if spotted.
The department recently shared a photo on social media reminding the public not to approach or feed alligators. Animal control officer Arp said people may see more of the reptiles during this time of year and offered safety tips for those who encounter them.
“Keep your distance don’t approach it. If it’s coming through your backyard or your property its more than likely just going to pass through. A little bit different if you have it in your garage or under your patio or your car something like that you’d have to contact myself or the local animal control,” Arp said.
Police said alligators that wander through residential areas will often move on their own if left undisturbed. In situations where an alligator is found in or under a structure, residents are advised to contact animal control.
Sunset Beach will host an Earth Day festival, Green Wave, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sunset Beach Town Park. Arp is scheduled to attend and will be available to answer questions about wildlife safety.
