Sunset Beach to consider raising height limit for hotels
SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The town of Sunset Beach is set to hold a public hearing in January about raising the maximum height for hotels in the area.
If approved, a Hampton Inn and Suites could be coming to The Village at Sunset Beach Shopping Center off the island.
Sunset Beach Hospitality Ventures LLC is requesting the town raise the maximum height for hotels from 50 feet to 60.
If the town makes the change and the proposal moves forward, it would be the first multi-story flag hotel built in Sunset Beach. At present, the island and surrounding area is limited to vacation rentals, many of which do not offer stays lasting less than a week.
One concern among some residents at council’s December 2 meeting is whether the building will look out of place.
Kelly Stuart, who represents Sunset Beach Hospitality Ventures addressed that concern.
“There are design guidelines, streetscape design guidelines, which the town is aware of and that we make sure are adhered to. Also, the Architectural Review Committee will make sure that whatever is going to be built will fit in nature with the village,” she said.
The public hearing will be held on January 6.
