Surf City beach accesses closed to public, town hall inoperable

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The beach in Surf City remains closed to the general public following Hurricane Florence.

Town leaders have been posting updates on damage, curfews, and debris pick-up on the town’s Facebook Page.

As of Monday afternoon, a town spokesman said only property owners, NC state licensed general contractors and insurance adjusters with a pass are allowed on the island.

The town said all public parks, public restrooms and public accesses are closed until further notice. The spokesman said the previous location for Town Hall at 214 N. New River Dr. is no longer operational due to heavy water damage. The new location for Town Hall is 201 Community Center Dr. If you need any assistance or to make any payments, from Community Development, Utilities and Finance, you can find these at 201 Community Center Dr.

The post warned people about the conditions on the beach saying, “Anyone who enters any beach area is entering at their own risk due to nails and other storm debris.”

Vacation rentals are prohibited until further notice.

Town leaders said a debris contractor is working very hard to remove sand and rebuild the dunes. They are also working to remove any debris located on the island and the mainland.

The town said they are anticipating debris pickup to begin Tuesday, Sept. 25th. Pickup will begin along the canal streets, working across the island and then moving to the mainland. Per FEMA, all vegetative debris that needs to be bagged, please place this inside of clear bags so that the contractor can make sure it is only vegetative. These bags will be available at Lowe’s Home Improvement.
