Surf City monitoring roads, beaches as Hermine moves through

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) – The surf started getting choppy as Tropical Storm Hermine made her way closer to the area.

Pender County EMS Director, Tom Collins, says as of 5:00 p.m., they have had several car accidents and some tree debris in the roads.

Collins says there is standing water everywhere.  Some of the roads have been closed. South Shore Drive in Surf City is always an issue when it rains here.

Town Manager, Larry Bergman, says they do advise drivers to stay off the roads as much as possible.

He says says they will be monitoring the roads, the beach  and the beach erosion throughout the afternoon and evening.

“We’re just gonna kind of sit tight,” Bergman said. “First light, we’ll check out the beach accesses, check out the beach for erosion, and make sure our public accesses are safe.”

The roads have been flooding throughout the day.

So be careful, there’s lots of standing water on Highway 17 and in Surf City.
