Surf City warns visitors to remove beach equipment
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The town is warning beach visitors about leaving debris behind.
Town Manager Larry Bergman said in recent years people have been leaving their tents, umbrellas, and other equipment on the beach at the end of the day or at the end of their vacation.
By law, beach equipment is supposed to be removed between sunset and sunrise. If it is left unattended, the town considers it abandoned property. The town can remove the items or fine the owner $50. Bergman said it is a hazard to wildlife and people and it disturbs the beach’s appearance.
Bergman said every week they have to start from scratch informing visitors about the rule.
“You know they are in and out,” Bergman said. “Every week we have potentially a whole new group of people where we need to educate and enforce potentially. We don’t want to be super bad guys about it, but at the same time, it does create some hazards or you know problems on the beach.”
Bergman said other beaches in the area have been having the same problem. He said some have even banned this type of beach equipment. He said right now they are giving out warnings, but if it continues, they may have to get more strict.
