#TBT: The Port of the Port City

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Port of Wilmington was once the home of a shipyard. During the course of World War II the 57 acre area grew to 84 acres and added a number of additional shipways to house boats.

The first ship completed there was the S.S. Zebulon B Vance. By the end of the war, the yard had produced over 240 ships.

The end of the war also marked the end of the shipyard. Shortly after 1945, the shipyard was dissolved and the location became the state port as we know it today.
