‘Teacher of the Month’ honored after 30 years of inspiring students in Brunswick County

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — After 30 years of teaching at South Brunswick Middle School, Bonnie Smith is preparing to retire—but not before receiving a special honor from her students and community.

Smith, a longtime math teacher, was surprised with WWAY’s “Teacher of the Month” award for May, the final recognition of the school year. Seventh grader Colten Gilbert nominated her, saying her teaching skills are like magic.

“She’s just the best teacher I’ve ever had,” Gilbert said. “I used to hate math, but now I love it. She’s really helped me get through a lot, and now I’m incredible at it.”

Smith’s passion for teaching started in childhood, when she would line up dolls and stuffed animals to play school.

“I always knew what I wanted to be,” Smith said. “It was never a question.”

That early dream became a reality when she began her career teaching sixth grade at South Brunswick Middle School. After 18 years, she moved to seventh grade and has been there ever since.

“I don’t like change, so when it was comfortable I just decided it was best if I just stayed,” Smith said.

Smith said she connects math to real life whenever possible, helping students understand concepts like percentages through shopping and taxes.

As she reflects on her final school year, Smith says she’s proud of the work she’s done and the students she’s helped.

“I feel like I’ve served the kids of Brunswick County for a very long time, and I’ve done the best job that I can,” she said. “Now somebody can take the reins and take over.”

The WWAY Teacher of the Month award is presented in partnership with Fulford Heating and Cooling and Beach Bagels and Subs. The honoree receives a $400 prize.
