Teacher of the Week: Claire Quick
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Teachers educate our youth every day, but more often than not the roles are reversed.
Our Teacher of the Week, Claire Quick, works with kindergartners and says patience is a daily lesson the students teach her.
“The younger age, I wasn’t sure about at first. Now that I am with them they are such a great group,” said Quick.
Quick says when she started at Sunset Park Elementary School, she found out she got the job a couple of days before the school year kicked off. Although she says she was very grateful for the opportunity, her past experience was with third and fourth graders.
“I thought I was more set for that,” she said. “But looking back on it, I’m so glad I ended up in kindergarten.”
Now in charge of 22 kindergarten students, Quick enjoys being a part of their individual and educational growth.
“They come in having a difficult time sometimes even writing their first name; knowing what their first name begins with. At the end of the year we’re at the point where they are reading books fluently,” she said.
Quick’s passion for teaching started with her mother, who worked was a teacher’s assistant.
“The connection she had with the kids was something I wanted,” Quick said.
To show Quick not only her patience but the connection she has with her students is making a difference in the community, we made her our Teacher of the Week.
