Teens build garden beds for seniors
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The non-profit organization “Kids Making It” is creating a big statement in the Wilmington community this summer.
With the help from the City of Wilmington and the Wilmington Housing Authority, ten teens have been employed to build and install raised garden beds for several senior living housing development. Each teen is able to learn a paycheck while learning the value of a dollar and giving back to those in the area.
“The value of hard work, the value of teamwork, and being able to say I can take care of myself and that’s what having a job means and plus the giving back aspect,” Jimmy Pierce said, the director of the program. “It’s a win, win, win, win, win!”
Pierce said the Feast Down East is also involved and now seniors in Hillcrest, Glover Plaza, Brooklyn Homes and Robert Taylor Senior Homes will be able to grow produce of their own. Seniors maintain the gardens themselves.
