Three Seahawks earn CAA Men’s Tennis honors
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Three members of UNCW’s defending Colonial Athletic Association champion men’s tennis team have picked up honors from the league in the first voting of the spring season.
Senior Andres Torres of Armenia, Columbia, shared CAA Singles Player-of-the-Week accolades, while the tandem of Agustin Savarino (Mar Del Plata, Argentina) and Michael Copeland (Johannesburg, South Africa) was selected CAA Doubles Team-of-the-Week.
Torres, who shared the honor with William & Mary’s Louis Newman, went 2-1 in singles matches at top of the Seahawk lineup to start new season. He clinched a 4-3 victory over FGCU with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 decision against Felipe Ramirez. He also upset No. 61-ranked Scott Webster of Appalachian State, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7), in a 5-2 conquest of Mountaineers.
Torres has sparked the Seahawks to consecutive victories over FGCU and Appalachian State following a season-opening loss vs. BYU in Orlando.
In doubles action, Savarino and Copeland own a 2-0 record after wins vs. FGCU and Appalachian State. The pair defeated FGCU’s Austin Bates/Javier Fernandez, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles and topped Appalachian’s Ben Webster/Alex Pavkovich, 6-4, at the No. 2 position.
The Seahawks return to the courts on Friday, Feb. 9, when Liberty kicks off a five-match home stand for Coach Mait DuBoisand his team.
