Tinsel too soon? Burgaw’s festive spirit raises the question: Is it time to decorate?
BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Should we be spreading holiday cheer this early in the season?
‘Tis the season…or is it? Wreaths and snowflakes are hanging in the town of Burgaw as they prepare for their tree lighting ceremony on November 30th.
The owner of Brown Dog Coffee Company Michelle Hilliard is feeling the Christmas spirit.
“Absolutely not too early for Christmas. We are super excited about Christmas, now I don’t have the coffee shop decorated yet, but we will be in the next week or so having that definitely decorated. Then of course our event space that we’ve decorated upstairs is going to be intensely decked out for Christmas because Burgaw is really like Christmas town,” Hilliard said.
Owner of Rochelle Furniture Company in Burgaw Ross Harrell understands why the town sets up early but thinks decorating before thanksgiving is too early.
“I think Christmas is creeping closer and closer to Halloween every year and just earlier and earlier and it’s all retail driven and I’m not necessarily a fan of that. I like Christmas being in December,” Harrell said.
Licensed clinical Psychologist Dr. Erika Geisler says there’s no harm in it.
“I think it is great to do it…I think it brings joy, again it brings a lot of people together it gives people something to talk about. I think the lights in a time when the dark is coming early, I think that is a wonderful thing too to see all the sparkles when you look outside and it just brings a lot of people together and just brings joy,” Dr. Geisler said.
Doctor Geisler adds even if you are not in the holiday spirit, putting up decorations will give you a big lift and give you something to accomplish.
