OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A sunrise walk on the beach turned into a turtle rescue Tuesday morning.

Mary Rodriguez says she noticed tiny turtle tracks in the sand that led her to a two-inch-long turtle.

She contacted the Oak Island Turtle Protection hotline and learned the turtle wasn’t a sea turtle, but a Diamondback turtle who was lost and exhausted.

Rodriguez says she learned land turtles can retract their head into their shell (sea turtles can not) and they have little legs/feet while sea turtles have flippers.

Pictures and measurements were taken of the tiny turtle before it was released into a more suitable environment.
