Tips for keeping your pets cool during the summer heat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With the Cape Fear experiencing a sweltering heat wave, many dog and cat owners will be spending time outdoors with their animal—but it’s important to keep your pet cool.

Doctor Scott Pett with Lanvale Animal Hospital in Leland says just like we need to cool off after being in the heat, so do cats and dogs.

If you have a cat that likes to go outside, Pett says they’ll generally know when to cool off in the shade—just make sure they have plenty of water.

For dogs, also make sure they have constant access to fresh water, and try to get your walks done in the morning before the heat.

Pett says dogs can easily over-exert themselves.

“They can get very obsessive, I got a dog that loves to play catch, and would do it until he just completely overheats himself,” he said. “So, limiting that kind of play, and maybe skipping out on days like today or yesterday where it was very hot.”

Pett adds pavement and concrete can also get hot during the day, so make sure your pets don’t have to walk for long distances. He also says to not leave your pets in the car—even for short periods or with the AC on.
