Top four team’s advance to CAA men’s tennis Semifinals
Elon, N.C. (CAA) – The top four seeds advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 CAA Men’s Tennis Championship after convincing victories on Friday at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C.
Top-seeded UNCW, #3 William & Mary and #4 College of Charleston were all 4-0 winners and #2 Elon moved on with a 4-1 triumph.
UNCW (12-8) defeated #8 Delaware to open its quest for a fifth CAA title. The Seahawks earned the doubles point with a 6-2 victory by Gabriel Hocevar and Michael Copeland over Roy Cheng and Dominick Perez at the No. 3 flight and a 6-4 win by the No. 2 tandem of Andres Torres and Michael Morphy over the Blue Hens’ Colin Wong and Blaise Casselbury.
UNCW was equally as impressive in singles as Daniel Groom topped Perez, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5, Ignasi de Rueda beat Casselbury, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Copeland closed out the match by knocking off Luis Marcano, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
Elon reached the semifinals by downing #7 Hofstra. In doubles, the No. 1 Phoenix duo of Mario Paccini and Petar Tomic were 6-3 winners over Coco Haener and Niko Vulinovich, and the No. 2 team of Neal Port and Salvador Mijares beat the Pride’s Jan Leithner and Marcus Smith by a 6-3 score.
In singles, Elon’s Felipe Osses-Konig topped David Schrott at No. 5, Jacob Bicknell beat Nick Silvestri, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 and top-seeded Felipe Sarrasague closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marcus Smith. Hofstra’s Leithner defeated Miljares, 6-4, in the first set at No. 3 and then earned the point after Miljares was unable to continue the match.
William & Mary got past #6 Drexel to reach the final four of the tournament. The Tribe took the doubles point after the No. 3 team of Addison Appleby and Lars de Boer downed Balaji Lakshmanan and Danill Ginzburg, 6-2, and the No. 2 duo of Tristan Bautil and Aidan Talcott defeated Hamza Laalej and Youssef Lahlou, 6-2.
W&M continued the momentum into singles as Christian Cargill was a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Lakshmanan at No. 2, Talcott topped Laalej, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and Damon Niquet clinched the match at No. 5 by beating Ginzburg, 6-1, 6-2.
College of Charleston began defense of its 2016 title with a win over #5 James Madison. The Dukes took the early advantage in doubles as the No. 2 team of Damon Roberts and Sebastian Salinas downed Fernando Ramirez and Alec Angradi, 6-2. The Cougars rallied for the point with a 6-2 victory by Benedikt Henning and Vasily Kichigin over August Simonsen and Miljan Ruzic at No. 3 and a 6-4 triumph by Juan Estevarena and Rodgrigo Encinas over Theophile Lanthiez and Paul Mendoza at No. 1.
In singles, Ramirez beat Tate Steinour, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5, Henning got past Mendoza, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 and Angradi outlasted Ruzic, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
In Saturday’s semifinals at Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, #1 UNCW meets #4 College of Charleston in a rematch of last year’s championship match, and #2 Elon takes on #3 William & Mary. The matches have been moved up to approximately 11:30 a.m. due to a threat of rain later in the day.
