Topsail assistant baseball coach suspended for altercation at North Brunswick
LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) – A Topsail high school baseball assistant coach was suspended Monday pending an investigation into an incident that occurred Friday night at North Brunswick High School.
Topsail assistant Coach Shayne Frey will not be allowed any contact with the program while the investigation is ongoing, per Pender County Schools.
Video shared with WWAY without the permission to air shows the alleged altercation happening between the two coaches after the game had ended in the handshake line behind home plate. An assistant coach for North Brunswick, McKinley Stanbery, can be seen visibly upset, ripping his hand away after the interaction with Topsail Assistant Coach Shayne Frey. Both Pender County Schools and Brunswick County Schools on Monday acknowledged that they were aware of the incident and are investigating.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged they responded to the incident Friday night, but the victim did not file charges.
The Pirates had just won Friday’s contest 14-7. The victory kept Topsail in first place in the Mideastern Conference with an 8-2 record against those foes.
