Topsail High’s baseball coach resigns while on paid leave
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Topsail High School’s baseball coach who has been on paid administrative leave since January has resigned.
Pender County schools spokeswoman, Miranda Roberts, says Jonathan Granville Gehris resigned Friday.
Gehris was arrested on December 20 and charged with misdemeanor assault on a female. Less than a month later, on January 15, he was booked back in jail on felony assault by strangulation charges. A few days later, the Pender County School Board issued a statement saying Gehris had been suspended with pay. The statement said the suspension would allow time for an investigation and is not to be interpreted as a reflection of his guilt or innocence.
On March 17, prosecutors dropped the felony assault by strangulation charge against Gehris.
A month later, on April 15, a judge found the Topsail High baseball coach not guilty of misdemeanor assault on a female. The District Attorney’s office says the victim took the stand but invoked her fifth amendment rights and did not answer prosecutor’s questions, except for her name and how she knew Gehris. Gehris remained on paid administrative leave.
From January 20 until June 30, the school district paid Gehris $24,218.90.
