Total Lunar Eclipse visible from the Cape Fear
SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Turning all eyes to the sky this week as a total lunar eclipse is set to take place. The lunar eclipse will begin around 1 a.m. on Friday.
The moon will pass into the earth’s shadow, or umbra.
It will appear to get slowly darker over the next hour to hour and a half before totality.
It will turn a red or dark brownish color at totality, before slowly getting lighter.
Ingram Planetarium manager Rebecca Gaskins has tips on how to get the best view.
“If you have access to a set of binoculars or a small telescope it can look really cool through the telescope. You don’t need anything big and fancy — just like a spotting telescope, something cheap. Really just go outside and have a look at it. If you can see the moon from where you usually are or if you can see the moon tonight you will probably be a pretty good spot to see it,” Gaskins explained.
Gaskins adds this should be visible to the entire U.S. and you don’t need any special glasses to safely look at the lunar eclipse.
