Town of Oak Island warns of Facebook contest scam

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Oak Island is warning about a scam linked to a cloned Facebook page.
The town said someone cloned the recent “Bill Smith Park Tree Naming Contest” post and created a false Facebook event, in an attempt to trick users into clicking on a fake link.
The fake post asked users to click the link and register in order to get free gifts.
The town said it will never send links or direct messages through Facebook.
“This scam attempt was entirely separate from the official Town account and was NOT the result of a hack or other intrusion,” the town wrote on Facebook. “Always remember to check the SOURCE of any Event, Post, or Link you may see. The OFFICIAL Town account is @TownofOakIslandNC.”
The town said advised you to check your account and change your password if you have clicked on any links, or feel you may have been a victim of this scam attempt.
