Toy safety for children during the holidays

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — Toys are likely at the top of the list for many kids this Christmas. However, the happiest time of year can also be one of the most dangerous ones.
A recent study shows that in 2020, emergency departments across the U.S. treated nearly 150,000 toy-related injuries of children aged 14 or under. Many smaller toys such as marbles or legos, can pose a choking hazard.
It’s not just the smaller toys, items like bicycles and scooters contribute to many ER visits. Novant Health Injury Prevention Coordinator Toni Scollins said there is one general rule to follow when buying toys as gifts.
“To make sure that it’s appropriate for the age. It’s always listed on the outer packaging, also for weight. Just because a child meets the weight requirements, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be able to play with the toy in the way it’s intended in a safe way,” Scollins said.
Scollins added that if you’re giving a toy to a child, it’s important to not leave them alone, especially with gifts like skateboards and bicycles.
Scollins also suggests if you suspect a child has swallowed a toy or has been hurting playing with one, take them to the emergency room as soon as possible.
