Traffic shift for Hampstead Bypass delayed until Friday due to weather

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — A planned traffic shift tied to the Hampstead Bypass project in Pender County has been delayed by inclement weather and is now scheduled to begin Friday evening, May 29, weather permitting.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, both southbound lanes of U.S. 17 near Leeward Lane will permanently shift onto newly constructed lanes before reconnecting with U.S. 17 near Vista Lane to continue through Hampstead.
Northbound traffic on U.S. 17 will remain in the current traffic pattern.
Drivers traveling south on U.S. 17 who need access to Transfer Station Road are encouraged to use alternate routes.
NCDOT advises motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling through the work zone.
The Hampstead Bypass project is designed to improve traffic flow and connectivity along the U.S. 17 corridor. The first segment of the bypass, stretching from N.C. 210 to Sloop Point Loop Road, is expected to open in late 2027.
