Tropical Depression Eight forms off Carolina coast

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As of Sunday, the National Hurricane Center began issuing advisories on Tropical Depression #8 off the Carolina coast.

Tropical Depression #8 is located about 400 miles east/southeast of Wilmington and will be moving toward the west/northwest through Tuesday while likely strengthening into Tropical Storm Hermine.

The storm will edge its way close to the Cape Fear, but will pass offshore so direct impacts in our area are not likely. Places including the Outer Banks may have some impact by mid-week and a tropical storm watch may be required for part of that area.

Tropical Depression #8 will have low impacts on the weather in Southeastern NC. The biggest threats include increase ocean swells, moderate to high rip currents risks and scattered showers with tropical downpours through mid-week. Rainfall totals could range from 1-2 inches, highest amounts along the coast. Isolated higher amounts are possible. Wave heights will build 3-5 feet in the coastal waters.

Please use extreme caution and pay attention to on-duty lifeguards if you have plans to head to the beach this week.

We are also monitoring Tropical Depression #9 near the Florida Keys as it could have an impact on our weather next weekend, but there is still low confidence at this time on project path.

You can get the latest tropical information in the WWAY Hurricane Center.
