UNCW ends William & Mary win streak and undefeated conference run

Seahawks trounce Tribe 85-74 in Trask

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – The Seahawks ended a home weekend of winning on Monday. UNCW defeated William & Mary 85-74 in a nationally televised game in front of a sold-out crowd at Trask Coliseum.

“Today was our day. I thought we played a really mature basketball game today,” said Seahawk head coach Takayo Siddle. UNCW led for nearly 35 minutes over the first-place William & Mary team. “We never hyped it up as if we were playing the #1 team in our league. What I didn’t want to do was overwhelm the guys and get them nervous and anxious.  I just told them it was a great opportunity for us. You don’t get a lot of opportunities in life, but when you get them, you have to take advantage. And that’s exactly what we did.”

William & Mary produced on offense with their new style, knocking down 13 3 pointers and getting to the foul line for 20 attempts. But the Seahawks outpaced the Tribe with balanced scoring and physicality. Every Seahawk who played scored, highlighted by Bo Montgomery’s career-high 24 points and a combined 22 points down low from the center tandem of Harlan Obioha and Khamari McGriff.

UNCW improves to 7-1 in Trask coliseum on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Up next for the Seahawks is Charleston. The team heads to the Palmetto State Thursday to take on the Cougars Thursday at 7 p.m.
