UNCW installs Permeable Pavement on parts of its campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some new pavement at UNCW is hoping to do more than just improve parking at the university.

Permeable Pavement ,which allows water to run through it, will soon replace several sections of conventional asphalt in UNCW’s Randall Parking Lot. This project is one of many looking to reduce the volume of polluted storm water runoff in the Bradley and Hewlett’s Creek watersheds. The North Carolina Coastal Federation, UNCW and the City of Wilmington are working with contractors on the project. UNCW Associate Professor Jennifer Biddle said collaboration is key for more projects like this in the future.

“These opportunities to collaborate is kind of where we all need to go. It would be great to see more examples of these kinds of partnerships.”

When the project is completed, it should keep about 14,000 gallons of water from our waterways.
