UNCW Men’s Tennis to face Tennessee in NCAA’s

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW’s back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association champions will battle Southeastern Conference semifinalist Tennessee in the 2018 NCAA Men’s Tennis Regionals in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Seahawks learned their opponent and destination late Tuesday during a special selection show on NCAA.com. A large turnout assembled in the Golden Hawk Room to hear the news.

UNCW (18-4) will take on the Vols (20-8) on Saturday, May 12. In addition to the Seahawks and UT, No. 7 North Carolina and Campbell will collide at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The first and second rounds will be held in Chapel Hill on May 12 and 13. The NCAA Championship finals will be held in Winston-Salem, N.C., May 18-28.

“After playing the No. 1 team in the country, any opponent seems like an improvement,” said Mait DuBois, UNCW’s 11th-year head coach. “Tennessee is a good team. They did well in the SEC and I think it’s going to come down to who’s ready to go that day.

“We’re having the best practices we’ve had all year. The guys are hungry. They come out, do the job and we get better every week. The guys were very clear at the beginning of the year. They want to advance and make the final site. They’ve been very consistent all year.

“We’ll play anybody, anytime, anywhere. We just didn’t want to play the No. 1 team in the country and we accomplished that.”

The journey up I-40 marks UNCW’s seventh trip to the NCAA Regionals overall and sixth appearance in the last eight years.

UNCW stands 1-6 in NCAA Tournament action and will be facing Tennessee for the second time in post-season play in Chapel Hill. The then 17th-ranked Vols topped the Seahawks, 4-1, on May 12, 2012, in the last meeting between the two clubs.
