UNCW Softball falls to Charlotte 5-0 ending their NCAA Regional tournament run

ATHENS, GEORGIA (WWAY) — UNCW Softball looked to stay alive in the NCAA Athens Regional with a match up against Charlotte Saturday afternoon in Athens.

After a loss to Georgia on Friday, the Seahawks needed a win against the 49ers. Pitcher Kara Hammock began on the mound for UNCW, recording five strikeouts in five innings. Taylor Vitola, Allison Corbin and Peyton Carver would all hit singles in the game for the Seahawks. Charlotte, with the help of Arianna Rodi who hit a two-run homer in the third inning, would defeat UNCW 5-0. This would conclude UNCW’s Softballs season with a 33-23 record. Despite the ending, head coach Ashley Wade couldn’t be more proud of her team.

“I’m really proud of this group. Obviously this wasn’t the way we wanted things to end, but extremely proud of this team, proud of our seniors, proud of these two. Our senior class did an amazing job leading us all year long and this teams done nothing but set history week after week. Even making it here for the second time in school history, so just couldn’t be more proud of this team,” Wade said.

Despite the loss, the Seahawks won their conference championship for the second time in three seasons.
