Universities use tracker app to make sure student-athletes show up for class

CHAPEL HILL, NC (WRAL via CNN) — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill spent years defending courses that didn’t require students to attend, and, over a decade, made significant changes to independent study and so-called “paper classes” to meet standards set by academic accrediting agencies and the NCAA.

Now, UNC is among colleges nationwide using an app to better track whether students, especially student-athletes, show up for class.

SpotterEDU is advertised as “automated attendance monitoring” used by schools and professors. It uses sensors in classrooms to detect when a phone with the app is present.
