USS North Carolina Battleship undergoes repairs from PTC Eight
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Battleship is undergoing repairs to fix damage done by Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight.
The battleship is a known staple for Wilmington and its history. Recently, it has been undergoing repairs due to water damage from a storm.
The steel of the ship began to rust and leak water into the admiral’s cabin, leaving holes in the steel and gallons of water flooded to drain from the cabin.
Maintenance tech Atwood Macmullin Boyd says that the progress already made is exponential and the repairs will continue, ultimately restoring the beauty and longevity of the battleship.
“Seeing all of the paneling back on, back together, seeing it come together, to look how it did, you know, before the storm, it’s great. I mean, gonna have fresh coats of paint on here soon, and you’re not going to even be able to tell a difference, and it’s going to be even better than it was beforehand. We’ve got new installation in the walls, so, should stay cooler, should require less energy, and the steel up top, solid, welds are great, we leak tested those, we’re in a great position,” said Boyd.
The hope with these repairs is to keep people coming to the battleship for years to come.
