WATCH: Surfers ride river waves in Germany
Australian surfing star Mick Fanning joined three other professionals to ride the Eisbach river wave in Munich, Germany, on Monday, October 2.
The three-time World Surf League champion arrived to Germany to celebrate the Oktoberfest, but still found some time to enjoy a surfing adventure.
The Eisbach river forms a wave of one meter (around 3.3 foot) high that surfers have been using since 1972, although surfing was officially permitted only in 2010, according to a Red Bull press release.
“It’s good fun. The boards are smaller than sea surfing with two side fins and a guitar pick in the back. The weight transition is different. You are fighting the wave, more like snowboarding,” said Fanning.
Australian pro surfers Mitch Crews and Jack Freestone and German Quirin Rohleder joined Fanning to get some river action too.
