Wake suspends driver’s education amid budget questions

CARY, NC (AP) — Wake County schools are suspending driver’s education programs because of questions about state funding.

Multiple media outlets reported that Wake chief business officer David Neter told the school board that no new classroom or behind-the-wheel classes will be offered after Friday.

Neter said students who have started the driving part of the class will be allowed to finish.

Neter said there is no money for driver’s education at the moment. North Carolina school districts are operating under a temporary spending plan that includes no funding for driver’s education. Neter says driver’s education costs $250,000 a month to provide.

State lawmakers have not completed the state budget for this school year. At least one third of North Carolina’s school systems suspended their driver’s education programs this summer because of funding questions.
