Well-known, award-winning cardiologist at NHRMC dies at 53

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A cardiologist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center known for his advancements in heart health has died.

According to an obituary by Andrew’s Mortuary, Hemant, “Henry”, Maganlal Patel passed away on August 3, 2020 at the age of 53.

Dr. Rob Harper with NHRMC said Patel died from a complication during a dental procedure.

In April of 2019, one heart patient ran in the recent 2019 Boston Marathon with the help of Patel. That’s why Patel received an award that granted him recognition nationwide. 

Patel made it possible for Peyton Chitty to run in the Boston Marathon in 2019. Patel gave Chitty his pacemaker after being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Chitty said Patel was like family.

“He just made me feel so at ease and comfortable, and I could tell from the get go that he cared. You can’t fake that. He was so genuine and it was his kindness and generosity and love. I knew I was in good hands, and that took a lo tof stress off me.”

Chitty awarded Patel with a certificate from the international organization “Cardiac Athletes.”

Dr. Harper said Patel was highly respected and loved by so many in the community.

“He was the best friend and partner you could ever hope to have. He was an awesome guy. He was an awesome doctor. He took great care of his patients. His patients loved him. He made every patient feel like they were the most important person in the world,” Harper said.

Harper said the funeral was held for Patel Friday morning. Patel is survived by his wife, Shital, son Drewv and daughter Macy and their family dog, Bentley.
