Whiteville High School Junior Serenity Harvey makes wolfpack history in the NCHSAA

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Whiteville student athlete took home the triple crown. She also made Whiteville High School history.

“It’s a weird feeling. I don’t know how to describe it, lots of excitement,” WHS State Champion Serenity Harvey said.

Whiteville High School Junior Serenity Harvey won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A 100, 200, and, 400 races. This makes her the first female wolfpack athlete to win at this stage. She also took home 4th place in the high jump. Harvey said she feels like her work has paid off.

“I’ll keep pushing myself to be better and even when no one is watching, keep putting in work. The only opponent is you, yourself,” Harvey said.

Harvey said she’s received a lot of support from her school, hometown, and coaches since the big win. Coaches like her track coach, Serena Smith, said she knew Harvey had it in her all along.

“We knew that she’d do well. It was just up to her to stay focused and do what she had been doing all season to maintain a first-place finish,” Smith said.

Smith said Harvey’s win hits close to home.

“It’s even more of an honor for it to be my niece that actually achieved that accomplishment and I just hope that other girls will see that they can be a state champion,” Smith said.

Harvey said her next goal is to work hard to maintain that title and possibly win more but she said her priority is staying on top of her schoolwork. She encouraged other student athletes to be just as good in the classroom as they are on the field, court, or in her case, the track.

“Keep your grades up, stay focused in class, listen to your teachers, get all your work done on the same day and just try to keep it maintained,” Harvey said.

Harvey is also known off the track. She also plays on the school’s volleyball and basketball teams.
