WASHINGTON, D.C. (WWAY) — Whiteville native MacKenzie Gore set a National’s franchise record Thursday afternoon for strikeouts on Opening Day.

The lefty struck out 13 batters in his first ever Opening Day start, also marking a new career high for Gore.

His 13 strikeouts beat the old record of 12 set by Max Scherzer in 2019.

Gore joins Bob Gibson as the only pitchers with 13 strikeouts and no walks in a scoreless outing on Opening Day.

Unfortunately for Gore, who also gave up just one hit, the Nationals would go on to lose in extra innings 7-3 to the Phillies, who scored four runs in the top of the tenth inning.
