Why are there not as many lightning bugs this year?

ASHEVILLE, NC (WLOS) — Late spring and early summer is a time of year famous in the mountains for some magical creatures.

But a viewer has noticed something unusual about their annual appearance, or lack thereof this year.

Powell Okpych contacted WLOS with these questions:

  • Why are there not as many lightning bugs this year?
  • Does it have anything to do with COVID-19?
  • Does it have anything to do with the weather?
  • Does it have anything to do with less pollution?

The most famous lightning bug is the Blue Ghost firefly because of its rarity and mysteriously blue color.

News 13 contacted the Henderson County Agriculture Extension Center for answers.

First, Powell is right. The glowing bugs are mostly absent this year. But it has nothing to do with pollution or COVID-19.
