Wilmington cheer and football teams qualify for nationals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The trip to Disney World has been something the Wilmington Eagles have dreamed about all season long, but they’re not quite there yet. They still have to raise thousands of dollars to make the trip.

This year the Wilmington Eagles Pee Wee football and cheer team qualified for the Pop Warner National Championships.

An accomplishment they’ve been working towards for years.

“It feels great because last year we almost made it but we didn’t,” Eagles player Patrick Hill Jr said. “So it feels better, especially for being here for a long time. It feels better to actually make it this year.”

Following an undefeated season, the Eagles will be heading to play for the top prize in the happiest place on earth.

But in order to visit Mickey, they have to raise more than twenty thousand dollars in the next few days.

“Twenty-one thousand is a lot of money to raise in four or five days,” Eagles Head Coach Greg Sidberry said. “So we’re asking the community as a whole to come out and support these men.”

So they will be going door to door until they leave to try and raise the money.

The team said it’s not going to be easy, but they’re not going to stop trying.

If they are successful raising the money, they are confident they can keep their winning streak going.

Best of luck to all the boys and girls in the championships.
